Khean Ra

Khean Ra lives in Cambodia and since the COVID-19 pandemic has been existing below the poverty line. In recent years, she has often worried about how to feed her family. But since she got an Equity Card, she’s able to sleep easier.

The card entitles her to cash payments she can use to buy food for her children. Now they don’t have to go to school on an empty stomach. It also entitles her to health services, like antenatal care, assisted birth and vaccinations and preventative care for newborns. This linking up of health services for pregnant women and babies is improving the health not only of Khean but thousands of other women in Cambodia. That’s important. Because it’s only when people have a secure social livelihood – and that includes basic financial security and basic health services – that they can actually participate in society.

Schemes like the Equity Card reduce poverty and inequality and help build more stable societies. So people are less reliant on international support. And that helps Germany because, over the long term, projects like these make societies and economies more stable. Which ultimately benefits Germany, as an exporting nation and an economy with strong international links.
