Cooperation in action Making knowledge audible: Audiopedia

Over 500 million women and girls worldwide cannot read or write. This prevents them from accessing education and important information, for example on topics such as health.

One solution to this problem is Audiopedia. Audiopedia is an open source tool that provides spoken information via mobile apps such as WhatsApp and solar-powered audio players. This information is tailored to the needs of women and girls in the Global South and is made available in their local language.

Every four seconds, a woman somewhere in the world accesses the Audiopedia knowledge base. There they can find answers to hundreds of important questions in areas such as health, family planning and business, in over 80 languages.

The BMZ has supported the roll-out of Audiopedia in Nigeria, Uganda, Brazil, India and Pakistan.
