Crisis in Lebanon Joint statement on further support for Lebanon by the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development

24 October 2024 | At today’s International Conference in Support of Lebanon’s People and Sovereignty, Germany pledged additional funds totalling 96 million euro to tackle the crisis in Lebanon.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development will provide 60 million euro of this funding for Lebanon and Syria. These funds were approved by the budget committee last week. The Federal Foreign Office will make available 36 million euro for humanitarian aid to Lebanon and Syria.

German support is channelled not only through UN agencies such as UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP and UNDP, but also through non-governmental organisations, the German Red Cross, as well as the Lebanese Humanitarian Fund and the Women's Peace and Humanitarian Fund. The aim is to reach internally displaced persons and ensure social, economic and institutional stability in Lebanon.

A large number of other donors are making substantial pledges to help address the crisis in Lebanon.

The number of internally displaced persons has increased more than sevenfold since the conflict in Lebanon escalated on 17 September, displacing more than 800,000 people. Evacuation orders have been issued for a quarter of Lebanon’s territory.

UN Flash Appeals and the Inter-Agency Regional Appeal have called on the international community to step up its efforts to alleviate the suffering on the ground as quickly as possible.
