Green people's energy for Africa
In rural regions in particular, it will not be an option for people to wait until they are connected to the national grid. Grid expansion can often be expensive and take a lot of time. The BMZ’s “Green People’s Energy for Africa (External link)” initiative helps set up decentralised energy systems on the basis of renewable sources, working closely with citizens, cooperatives, municipalities and small and medium-sized enterprises.
A special focus is on promoting local value chains through the productive use of energy and on supplying energy to schools or community centres. In Uganda, for instance, the BMZ is promoting solar energy in schools.
These development cooperation programmes build on experiences and lessons learnt in Germany. Energy cooperatives are the backbone of the energy transition.
