Social situation Further increase in poverty and inequality due to the COVID-19 pandemic

In Peru, wealth and income are very unevenly distributed. Although poverty and inequality had seen significant reductions in Peru prior to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the pandemic has made it clear that the structural causes of insufficient economic, social and political participation remain.

Peru’s poverty reduction efforts have been thrown back by ten years. Poverty is particularly high in the rural regions of the Andean highlands, on the eastern slopes of the Andes, in the Amazon region and among the indigenous population.

A large number of Peruvians still depend for a living on subsistence farming or on poorly paid jobs in the informal sector that are not covered by social protection systems.
