Core area “Sustainable economic development, training and employment” Expansion of dual vocational training

Dual vocational training as a practice-based training model was introduced in Mexico in 2015. Germany is supporting the efforts of partners from the business sector, policymaking and civil society to further expand this vocational training option and make it more well known.

Dual vocational training is intended to complement school-based teaching, as a way of responding to the demand for qualified skilled workers and opening up new job opportunities for young people. So far, however, the number of trainees – especially in structurally weak federal states – is still quite small. In addition, women are underrepresented and are more likely to receive training in professions that offer fewer employment opportunities and are less well paid.

The GIZ dual vocational training project therefore puts an emphasis on women and young people in disadvantaged regions. Young women in particular are encouraged to learn an industrial profession through vocational training advice specifically designed to support them as a group. Information events and further training courses are organised with the aim of motivating companies to participate in the dual training system. Adapted concepts are being developed and tested for structurally weak regions and new target groups outside the vocational training schools.

The project is also helping to maintain the quality of training courses and increase the acceptance of the dual training system in companies and in society.
