Only about 15 per cent of Madagascar's rural people have access to electricity. Most households rely on charcoal and firewood to meet their energy needs. Germany has therefore focused its activities on improving the rural power supply

Mobile solar panels are used to power small electrical items in areas where there is no access to electricity in Madagascar.

To that end, the BMZ supports the use of renewable energy, because Madagascar's natural conditions for the generation of renewable energy are very good. There is great hydropower potential on the eastern coast. There is strong and constant wind on the northern and southern tips of the island. And in the arid southern and western parts in particular, there is potential for large-scale solar power generation.

In view of this, Germany is providing advice to the Malagasy government with regard to its efforts for an energy transition, supporting the construction of hydropower and solar power facilities, and providing support to training programmes for solar technicians.
